Montana At-Large Special Election Candidate Assaults Guardian Reporter…

Seriously, you cannot make this stuff up. As I noted in a prior article, among the special election races taking place this year is one in Montana for the At-Large seat there.{1} Who if asked “how can we help our chances to win”? when faced with a close election in the closing days would answer with the words “by assaulting a reporter”?

My guess is no one but the stupid would suggest such a thing but that is indeed what happened:

The race to fill Montana’s sole seat in the U.S. House of Representatives took a violent turn Wednesday, and a crew from the Fox News Channel, including myself, witnessed it firsthand…

Faith, Keith and I arrived early to set up for the interview in a room adjacent to another room where a volunteer BBQ was to take place. As the time for the interview neared, Gianforte came into the room. We exchanged pleasantries and made small talk about restaurants and Bozeman.

During that conversation, another man — who we now know is Ben Jacobs of The Guardian — walked into the room with a voice recorder, put it up to Gianforte’s face and began asking if he had a response to the newly released Congressional Budget Office report on the American Health Care Act. Gianforte told him he would get to him later. Jacobs persisted with his question. Gianforte told him to talk to his press guy, Shane Scanlon.

At that point, Gianforte grabbed Jacobs by the neck with both hands and slammed him into the ground behind him. Faith, Keith and I watched in disbelief as Gianforte then began punching the reporter. As Gianforte moved on top of Jacobs, he began yelling something to the effect of, “I’m sick and tired of this!”{2}

Or if you need a video:

Oh wait, wrong video:

According to Fox News, Greg “The Hammer” Gianforte has been cited for misdemeanor assault for this. I found it interesting that there were folks explaining this away with claims of “well the reporter was a lefty” or “well, he will win anyway” which may be true.{3}

But no matter what, this is now a lose-lose situation. Why? Well, if he loses in a landslide in the election day voting today, he will lose the race. And if he wins the election today? Well, it is virtually certain he will be forced to resign and either way, he is out and another race will need to be held. It is my hope that in the Age of Trump this is not going to become any sort of trend and for now, this is just an outlier. Lets hope it stays that way.

{3} The reason? 70% of Montana voting has already took place via mail-in balloting.
